This is going to be a controversial opinion but I really think if we traveled to another timeline where Sony bought L5 before the end of the PS2 era they would have ended up fairing much better as an arm of SCEJ than going out "on their own" so to speak. I can understand how it's their decision if they want to do what makes them money and what they're good at, or try new things and be creative and have that freedom to fail, but we know how that turned out in the end. WKC was also kind of a flop and it really started to become apparent to me that they have a specific wheelhouse they should stick to and they just refused. Just change some of the naming of the world and things and nix the statues that referenced the first game and you're done. So we got this game that almost might as well have been a completely different property. But they instead took the risk of (pretty much) completely tossing the story/foundation of the first game and starting from scratch with completely different gameplay concepts/mechanics, and without SG involved. If they had just taken that game format and the SG collaboration and worked on the things that didn't work well, like combat, and just upped the ante a bit it could have been a great sequel. They seem to be given the opportunity to improve upon or simply repeat the success of certain titles, but then end up going in another direction and falling (somewhat) flat. They've had a ton of easy slamdunks presented to them and somehow managed to miss each time.
I'm going to have to go with others and say mismanagement.
